Building Beyond – How to build the city of tomorrow?

On the occasion of the festival “Building Beyond – How to build the city of tomorrow?” organized at Leonard:Paris from 8 June to 19 July 2018, La Fabrique de la Cité offered a glimpse into the future of our cities.

Guided by Nicolas Gilsoul (architect) and Erik Orsenna (member of the French Academy), La Fabrique de la Cité proposed a world tour of urban innovations. We continued this exploration with a visit of what the station of the future could be like, with Patrick Ropert (CEO, Gares et Connexions) and Yo Kaminagai (Head of Design, RATP). This infrastructure, which acts as an economic driver in cities, is gradually becoming more open to their neighborhoods, so much so that the border between the station and the city is becoming increasingly blurred.

The Building Beyond festival also allowed La Fabrique de la Cité to share the main teachings born of its events. The festival’s audience was able to tune into La Fabrique de la Cité’s international seminar, which took place in Vienna from 3-5 July 2018, and to experience a live broadcast of the seminar’s inaugural lecture by Pr. Viktor Mayer-Schönberger (Oxford Internet Institute) regarding the potential of data in the resolution of urban issues. This broadcast was followed, in Paris, by a debate between Charles Népote (La FING) and Jacques Priol (CEO, Civitéo) on the obstacles currently preventing cities from unlocking the potential of urban data. During a second event dedicated to the conclusions born of La Fabrique de la Cité’s international seminar, Marissa Plouin (Coordinator, OECD) focused on the determinants of urban quality of life and on the ways in which a quality of life policy can come alive in a city.

During six weeks of open, free events, La Fabrique de la Cité also explored the imaginary of cities conveyed by cinema. In a cycle of three screenings, Ollivier Pourriol, creator of Ciné Philo, invoked the power of images to invite us to take a different look at cities. From the elemental city, which Man has managed to tame, to the underground city, terra incognita in essence, the city is a scene that intrigues and fascinates many filmmakers.
